Upon graduation from Academy, served aboard U.S.S. Ahwanee as flight controller.  Served with distinction, promoted to lieutenant, junior grade in 2360.  On away mission to previously uncharted planet in Sector 19658 in 2361, took command of team when ranking officer was killed by a local  predator.  Subsequently promoted to lieutenant . 
Transferred  to U.S.S. Odyssey in 2363, promoted to lieutenant commander, ship's second officer in 2364.   Transferred in 2367 to operations manager  on Starbase 219.   In  2368 accepted promotion to commander and post as adjutant to Admiral Mamoru Nakamura, Starbase Commander .   Transferred to Starfleet Command, 2370,  to serve as adjutant to Admiral Richard Leyton. 
In 2372, stardate 41970, promoted to captain of U.S.S. Lakota.  Court martialed  for attacking U.S.S. Defiant (when she was falsely  led to believe its crew had been replaced by Dominion changelings), and for supporting coup attempt on Federation Government by Admiral Leyton.  Acquitted of most serious charges. Demoted back to commander for one year before regaining rank  and assignment of U.S.S. Appalachia, which fought second Borg incursion to Sector 001 in 2373.
